Mirabai Chanu won a silver for India at Tokyo Olympics 2020

A shaky triumph for the Indian men's hockey team, followed by a loss for Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal in the mixed doubles, gave billions of Indians what they had hoped for: the first of many gold at the Tokyo Games.

Mirabai Chanu, a Manipur weightlifter, finished third in the women's 49kg division. Chanu's best snatch lift was 87 kilogrammes, while she placed second in the clean and jerk with a lift of 115 kilogrammes.

The Commonwealth Games gold medalist lifted a total of 202kg to put behind her the sorrow of failing to complete a single respectable lift in the clean and jerk section at the Rio Olympics. This was India's second weightlifting medal overall. Karnam Malleswari was a bronze medalist for India at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Zhihui Hou of China won gold in the women's 49-kg weightlifting event at the Tokyo Olympics, lifting a total of 210 kg, while Windy Cantika Aisah of Indonesia took bronze. Chanu became the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal, following Karnam Malleswari, by lifting a total of 202 kilogrammes in the women's 49kg division. Mirabai Chanu set a new Olympic record in the clean and jerk with a lift of 115 kilogrammes.

Mirabai Chanu first tried in the snatch segment at the Tokyo International Forum with an 84kg lift. Later in the tournament, the Indian ace improved with an 87kg lift, putting her in a strong position. Mirabai's momentum was halted when Hou Zhihui broke through with an 88kg lift on her first try. In her third lift, Hou Zhihui set a new Olympic record in the snatch with a weight of 94 kg.
